چکیده

In our 1996 article “Have Americans’ Social Attitudes Become More Polarized?” (AJS 102 [3]: 690–755) we addressed the substantive question of whether or not polarization on 18 morally charged social issues had increased over a period of approximately two decades. That article examined all of the then-available years of data from the General Social Survey (GSS) and the National Election Study (NES). The approach was necessarily broad, entailing more than 200 separate analyses of polarization within the population as a whole, within subgroups of the population and between groups. Moreover, each examination in turn required the use of three or four statistical models. Our major conclusion was that little polarization had occurred over these years and that the American public was by many criteria more unified in its views in the 1990s than it had been in the 1970s. The most important exception to this generalization, based on analyses of data from both the NES and the GSS, was that the population’s attitudes toward abortion had been polarizing. The results of Mouw and Sobel’s analysis of the NES data suggest that attitudes toward abortion had not been polarizing, thus challenging the one qualification we made to our central

The Polarization of Public Opinion about Competence

The existing literature on polarization has focused predominantly on spatial polarization and partisanship. This paper extends the focus of polarization to the literature on issue ownership, and competence. Using ANES data from 1972 to 2012, we identify a pattern of partisan polarization in competence assessments in parallel with elite polarization in the US and some evidence of increasing comp...

Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules Charge-Charge Transfer-Dipolar Polarization Classification of Infrared Intensities.

Fundamental infrared vibrational transition intensities of gas-phase molecules are sensitive probes of changes in electronic structure accompanying small molecular distortions. Models containing charge, charge transfer, and dipolar polarization effects are necessary for a successful classification of the C-H, C-F, and C-Cl stretching and bending intensities. C-H stretching and in-plane bending ...

Minimizing Polarization and Disagreement in Social Networks

The rise of social media and online social networks has been a disruptive force in society. Opinions are increasingly shaped by interactions on online social media, and social phenomena including disagreement and polarization are now tightly woven into everyday life. In this work we initiate the study of the following question: Given n agents, each with its own initial opinion that reflects its...

Hadronic B Decays in PQCD

B factory experiments have accumulated a lot of data and have reported many interesting results [1]. Some observables, mixing-induced CP asymmetries for b → s penguin modes, branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries for B → πK and ππ, and polarization fractions for penguin-dominated B → V V modes, have exhibited some deviations from näıve expectations in the Standard Model. It is necessary to ...
